Seedlings!!

May 15th, 2012

I grew these from seed I got from crossing Sunset Snows X Chanted. I think they are neat! Nothing to go naming and introducing, of course, but fun to see what the gene mixing made. Not sure why one of them is a pretty plum purple.

I have some better shots of these and the others yet to come…

Irises are starting…

May 8th, 2012

A few standard dwarf bearded varieties are open now, along with some random oddities. This little ‘Boo’ from 1971 is as cute today as it was then.

This odd little amoena has only a single bloom on each stem, but the clump has 22 stalks so it makes a good show anyway.

Mr. Bugsy was looking right at the camera until I pushed the button.

More to come!

A weekend of rebirth

April 9th, 2012

There’s a reason the catholic church co-opted this season for the story of the Passion of Jesus. We have seen everything bursting back to life after a long cold dark winter, in more ways than one. Finally able to get out in the beds and work again. So nice… and so over due. What a mess. Anyway, here’s a few pictures from the last few days. Hope to be posting more regularly now and Iris season is about to begin so *fingers crossed*.

Mr. Junebug is ever so happy about the sunshine. Today he hid under this plant thinking I couldn’t see him. He knows he is not supposed to be in this bed.

The little ‘greek wind flowers’ or ‘anemones’ are blooming like crazy. Love their bright faces this time of year. They will disappear with the heat of summer. Very ephemeral.

This deep purple hellebore is blooming in the courtyard. It’s a favorite.

This cute little species iris, I. unguicularis, opened a bloom today. One flower on one stalk. Hope it does better in the future.

And check this beautiful rhodie we brought home from Kellie and John’s place last fall. Love it with that old cedar stump and the hemlock.

I’ll attempt to be more prompt with posts now that I am more mobile and there’s things to see.

Sproing!

April 7th, 2012

Spent the afternoon working outside. We finally had a lovely, bright sunny day. I accomplished almost a dozen goals, inside and out. Will try and take pics tomorrow of the various blooms popping up around the garden. Cats were all out at one point or another. Lilacs are swelling. My favorite season approaches. Green dreams to all.

Spring is coming!

February 13th, 2012

We have crocuses blooming in a pot on the front steps and these ‘Katherine Hodgkins’ reticulatas oped today. So cute! Now if we can keep the slugs at bay for a few more days we’ll get to enjoy them fully.

Cats aren’t impressed.

Don’t you love it when they sleep with their paws over their eyes like this? So cute. Miss Gracie is one hairy mess tho.

Our governor signed marriage equality legislation into law today. Expect a wedding announcement in 2013!

Snowpocalypse 2012!!!11!1omgponies!!!1!

January 20th, 2012

So I am dating myself with the title. Meh. (That should correct the balance…). So we went From a lovely 15-inch snowfall to a slow-motion ice storm that wrecked havoc across the entire region. From the previous post to this:

Bleh! Everything was covered in snow when the freezing rain hit, creating huge masses of ice on every limb. It’s been at least 15 years since the trees around here have experienced this. Right now tho the woods around us are filled to bursting with bright noise as ice falls and branches continue to snap under its weight. The immediate, dull, ooomph of one large wet mass hitting another gives the impression of huge beasts battling in the dark. The cats refuse to leave the porch or remain outside for more than a few minutes. These sounds send tingles down the spine.

Everything is buried under a deep, icy gray blanket. Protected, until spring brings her warmth again. It was a most unusual experience to watch the build up of the ice first hand across the garden. It was sculpture in slow motion. The soft waves of the snow quilt slowly hardening and compacting under the weight of the ice, and the new forms it exposed thereby were wonderful. There was no way to capture it in a photo tho…

Baking on a Snowy day

January 16th, 2012

We woke up to another day of snow. Not unwelcome as we had nothing to do nor places to be. Took a long walk into the woods along an old logging road and checked out the winter landscape here on the point. Here’s what it looked like from the house.

I stayed in the rest of the day and baked a pumpkin pie from scratch (gluten-free too!), but realized as it finished baking that I forgot to add the sugar. Oops!

Cookies!!

December 20th, 2011

Joey came over and helped decorate sugar cookies. I think they turned out fabulous!

Merry Xmas!

Slow fall days

November 7th, 2011

Not alot going on around here this autumn. Our wonderful neighbor took down a few trees for us, so we’ve been cleaning that up. Cats are slowing down and spending more time indoors napping. Light frosts are coating everything outside most mornings, but no killer frost yet.

Mr. Bugsy is becoming a good garden cat. Not only is he keeping the rodents down quite well, he also likes to follow us around while we work and hang out. He has also taken to spending afternoons in this chair. looking like a cloud of orange fluff.
